Newhaven College ClimateWatch Trail
Situated on beautiful Phillip Island, Newhaven College provides education from Prep to Year 12. This unique 82 acre site is bursting with wildlife and a prime location for a Climate Watch Trail. Few studies have been conducted on the impact of climate change on Australia’s plants and animals over time and, as part of the unique experience at the Year 9 Environmental Centre, students have worked together to create this trail as part of a nation-wide scientific study. They have also created an education program for younger year levels, demonstrating to others in the school how to monitor and observe species.
This trail, created in 2018, is used as part of the science curriculum throughout the school, helping to teach about climate change, phenology and biodiversity. It can be a ‘one location’ visit for ten minutes or an hour long walk around the property to all six locations. Students are encouraged to think globally, act locally and make a difference!
